Out with the old, in with the new…
Version 1.0.4 shipped with a change to the URL of the SSB API. This change was due to the official launch of a new Simple Share Buttons server, which exists solely for the API.
Some background information…
The previous API is still running, and provides some users with their Facebook share counts and Geo IP tracking data. Please check the version of the plugin that you are running now to see if this will affect you, you shall need 1.0.4 or higher. If you’re already running a version higher than this, you have nothing to worry about.
If however you are running 1.0.3 or lower, and taking advantage of the SSB API, it is important that you update before the old API is discontinued…
Why discontinue the old API?
The old API runs on the same server as the simplesharebuttons.com website, which is required to provide documentation, support, license activation and updates to its users. With an average or 2/3 calls a second this is having an effect on the service provided.
Requiring users to update to the latest API, the two service areas can be kept separate, thus providing a more reliable and sustainable service.
How do I update?
If you have a valid and active license, you can update the plugin at anytime via your WP Dashboard. You can also manage your purchases and download the plugin via simplesharebuttons.com, checkout the documentation on managing licenses here.
When will the API be discontinued?
We plan to cease providing access to the old API in three weeks time – around 9am UTC+00:00 November 16th. This will hopefully provide ample time for any affected users to get up-to-date.
